Tout, Thomas Frederick

Tout, Thomas Frederick (1855–1929)

English historian, professor of history at Manchester University 1890–1925. He specialized in studying the administrative history of medieval England, and his works on the subject include The Place of the Reign of Edward II in English History, 1914. He was also the author of several successful history textbooks.

Tout was born in London, and educated at St Olave's School, Southwark, and Balliol College, Oxford. Before becoming professor at Manchester, he held the chair in history at St David's College, Lampeter, 1881–90. He was elected president of the Royal Historical Society in 1925.
