Towcester

Town in Northamptonshire, central England, 13 km/8 mi southwest of Northampton; population (2001) 9,200. The chief industry is light engineering and there is an agricultural trade. Towcester is built on the site of the Roman settlement Lactodorum.

The motor-racing circuit Silverstone is about 6 km/4 mi to the southwest.

The Roman road Watling Street runs through the town. St Laurence's church has Norman elements and a Perpendicular Gothic tower. A grammar school was founded here by Archdeacon William Sponne (died 1449), who was rector here in the 15th century.
