Townsend, Gregor (1973- )| Scottish rugby union player. When he made his international debut in 1993 at the age of 19, he was regarded by many observers as the most naturally gifted stand-off to emerge in British rugby since Jonathan Davies. However, for years he struggled to match his excellent running and passing skills with the consistency needed at international level. His performances finally matched his potential in the 1999 Five Nations championship, when he became the first Scottish player to score a try in every match of the tournament, and Scotland won the title. He toured South Africa with the British Lions in 1997 and played in two Test matches. He finished his career as Scotland's most capped player. |
International appearances (1993-2003) 86 (including 2 for the British Lions) |
| Born in Edinburgh, he began his senior club career with Gala, before moving to English side Northampton. In 1998 he signed for French side Brive. In June 2000 he joined the French side Castres. |
