Toynbee, Joseph

    0.06 sec.

Toynbee, Joseph (1815–1866)

British ear specialist. His particular field of study was the pathology of the ear, on which, in 1860, he published his classic study Diseases of the Ear.

In 1857, Toynbee was appointed aural surgeon to St Mary's Hospital, London, the first general hospital with an ear department. He died tragically as a result of an experiment, in which he inhaled a lethal mixture of chloroform and prussic acid to test its effect on tinnitus (ringing in the ear).
