Toyonaka

City in Osaka prefecture, Japan, 12 km/7 mi north of Osaka; population (1998 est) 389,400. Since 1955, Toyonaka has developed as a dormitory settlement for Osaka commuters. Industries include textiles, machinery, and oil refining. Agricultural produce from the surrounding area includes wheat, rice, and flowers.

Toyonaka's eastern district was the site of an experiment in urban development in 1961, Senri New Town (Senri Nyu Taun). This residential district was stimulated by Expo '70, staged in Osaka. In addition to an international airport and Osaka University (1931), Toyonaka has an open-air museum of traditional Japanese farmhouses.
