    0.01 sec.

Très riches Heures du Duc de Berri, Les

Illuminated manuscript painted by the three Limbourg brothers, Paul, Herman, and Jan, about 1413-15 (Musée Condé, Chantilly). It is a Book of Hours (see Hours, Book of) executed for Jean, Duke of Berry, (died 1416), though it was not finished until about 70 years after his death, by the painter Jean Colombe.

The manuscript contains a number of biblical scenes and 12 illustrations depicting the occupations and background of nobles and peasantry for each month of the year. The various châteaux of the duke are minutely depicted, and figures and landscape are combined in such images as the February snow scene, the cavalcade of nobles in spring, and the autumn boar hunt. A map of Rome and a medical-astrological illustration are also included.
