Treviso

Town in Veneto, northeast Italy, on the Sile River, 26 km/16 mi northwest of Venice; population (2001) 80,100. Its industries include the manufacture of machinery, ceramics, paper, and textiles. The cathedral (15th–16th century) was built on the site of a Romanesque church founded in the 11th century, and has an altarpiece by Titian.

Treviso was prosperous in medieval times, first as a free city and later under Venice from 1389. It is a walled town with canals, winding alleys, and arcades. There are several palaces, including the Palazzo de Trecento, built in 1207. The town suffered heavy damage in World Wars I and II.
