Tragic Overture

Overture by Brahms, Op. 81, composed in 1880 as a companion-piece to the Academic Festival Overture, written as an acknowledgment of the honorary degree of doctor of philosophy conferred on him by Breslau University (in Wrocław in modern-day Poland) in 1879. The work was first performed in Vienna on 26 December 1880.
