Trans-Amazonian Highway

Road in Brazil, running parallel to the River Amazon and linking Recife in the east with the provinces of Rondônia, Amazonas, and Acre in the west. The road was begun as part of the Programa de Integração Nacional (PIN; National Integration Programme) in 1970, and was intended to reduce the isolation and promote the economic development of the Amazon Basin. However, it has been largely abandoned because of controversy over the environmental hazards following deforestation.
