Transbaikalia

Mountainous area in the southeastern Russian Federation, between Lake Baikal in the west and Amur oblast (region) in the east. The terrain of Transbaikalia is characterized by forested ridges and steppe valleys, and the area is rich in mineral resources. The main cities in this region, which was one of the first areas of Siberia to be settled, are Chita and Ulan-Ude.
