AnguillaIsland in the eastern Caribbean; area 160 sq km/62 sq mi; population (2000 est) 11,800. Anguilla is a popular tourist destination because of its white-coral sand beaches. However, 80% of its coral reef has been lost as a result of tourism (pollution and souvenir sales). Its main exports include lobster and salt. The currency used is the East Caribbean dollar. It has been a separate dependency of the UK since 1980; its capital is The Valley. Both English and Creole languages are spoken. A British colony from 1650, Anguilla was long associated with St Christopher–Nevis but revolted against alleged domination by the larger island and seceded in 1967. A small British force restored order in 1969, and Anguilla retained a special position at its own request; since 1980 it has been a separate dependency of the UK. From 1982, the government has consisted of the governor, executive council, and legislative house of assembly. |
