transposing instrument

Musical instrument that does not play at the pitch of their notation, but automatically at a higher or lower pitch. The English horn, clarinet, horn, and trumpet are transposing instruments; the flute, oboe, bassoon, and trombone are not. In brass bands, all the instruments except the bass trombone are transposing instruments.
