Trasimene, Lake
| Lake in Umbria region, central Italy; depth 7 m/22 ft; area 128 sq km/49 sq mi. In 1898 Lake Trasimene was partially drained into the River Tiber, thus reclaiming approximately 22 sq km/8 sq mi of land. The Carthaginian general Hannibal defeated the Romans under Gaius Flaminius on its shores in 217 BC. |
