Traverse City

City and administrative headquarters of Grand Traverse County, in the northwestern part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, at the head of Grand Traverse Bay; population (1990) 15,200. It is a year-round resort with boating, fishing, swimming, and skiing. The region is famous for its cherries, which, along with other fruits, are canned, frozen, and shipped from the city.

It was settled in 1847 and was a lumbering centre in the 19th century. Contemporary manufacturing includes metal and wood products, machine tools and dies, hydrants, and clothing. Traverse City is host to the National Cherry Festival and the Northwestern Michigan Fair, and is the home of the Northwestern Michigan Symphony. Northwestern Michigan College (1951) is here.
