Travis County

County in south-central Texas; area 2,562 sq km/989 sq mi; population (1990) 576,400. Austin, the state capital, is also the county capital; an expanding educational, research, industrial, governmental, and commercial complex is centred around it. Poultry, sheep, goats, and dairy and beef cattle are raised in the west and northwest. The county produces fruit, pecans, grain, cotton, potatoes, limestone, and clay, and has many lake and hill recreational areas.

Crossed by the Balcones Escarpment, it is drained by the Colorado River, whose flood control dams provide power.
