Trelawny, Jonathan

    0.01 sec.

Trelawny, Jonathan (1650–1721)

English bishop, one of the seven bishops who were tried in 1688 for refusing to read James II's Declaration of Indulgence from the pulpit. He and his co-defendents were acquitted on charges of seditious libel, a blow to James's attempts to restore toleration of Catholicism.

Trelawny was born near Pelynt, Cornwall, and held successively the bishoprics of Bristol, Exeter, and Winchester.
