Trelew

Agricultural centre in Chubut province, in the region of Patagonia, southern Argentina, 64 km/40 mi south of Puerto Madryn; population (1996) 90,000. Trelew was founded by Welsh settlers in 1888. It is a small commercial town with its own airport, and is at the centre of a sheep-farming area. There is some agricultural trade, and trout- and salmon-fishing.

Trelew was formerly served by the Belgrano railway, which ran from Rawson, the capital of Chubut, down the valley of the Chubut River. There is an annual ‘Eistedvod de Chubut’ festival, which celebrates Welsh cultural traditions. The town now also serves as a tourist centre.
