Trento

Capital of Trentino-Alto Adige region, Italy, on the Adige River and the Brenner Pass route, 160 km/100 mi northeast of Milan; population (1992) 101,500. Industries include the manufacture of electrical goods, cement, agricultural machinery, chemicals, and processed foods and beverages. The Council of Trent was held here from 1545 to 1563.

Trento is of pre-Roman origin, and became part of the Holy Roman Empire under Otto I in the 10th century. It remained German, ruled by prince-bishops, until 1801 when it was taken by the French. It was ceded to Austria in 1803, and passed to Italy after World War I. During World War II it was reincorporated into Germany in 1943, but was returned to Italy in 1945.

The town has a 12th–13th-century cathedral, Lombard-Romanesque and Gothic in style; old walls; and a castle, now a museum.
