trial by battle

Decision in a legal case arrived at by fighting between litigants or their champions, the assumption being that God would not let the innocent be vanquished. It was introduced by the Normans and had largely fallen into disuse by the late middle ages but it was not formally abolished until 1819 after an isolated attempt to invoke the right to this method of trial.
