Trier, Lars von (1956– )

Danish film director, writer, and actor. A distinctive visual stylist, he has become a favourite of the art-house circuit, winning acclaim for his Forbrydelsens element (1984), Europa (1991), Breaking the Waves (1996; winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes), Idioterne/The Idiots (1998), and Dogville (2003).

Dancer in the Dark (2000), starring Icelandic singer Björk, won the 2000 Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Trier has also worked in television, notably on the Danish miniseries Riget (1994) and Riget II (1997), which blended soap opera, hospital drama, and surrealism.
