Trifid Nebula

Nebula in the constellation of Sagittarius, about 3,000 light years from the Sun and about 12 light years across. It is also known as Messier 20 (M20). It takes its name, which means ‘divided into three’, from the apparent division of the bright part of the nebula into three lobes by dark bands of dust.
