Trikkala

Town and department of central Greece, in the region of Thessaly; area 3,338 sq km/1,289 sq mi. The town is situated on the River Lethíos, on the northwestern edge of the Thessalian plain, 56 km/35 mi southwest of Larisa. It is the chief market for the agricultural products of the Pindus Mountains and for the crops of the Plain of Thessaly: wheat, maize, tobacco, and cotton.

The town of Trikkala is the capital of the department of Trikkala and the seat of an archbishop. It has a mosque, built in 1550, and a Byzantine fortress. In winter the town's population is increased by an influx of Vlachs (Romanians), who come down from the mountains with their herds.
