Trochu, Louis Jules

Trochu, Louis Jules (1815–1896)

French general who was in command of the city garrison during the Siege of Paris (September 1870–January 1871) that ended the Franco-Prussian War. His 400,000 troops conducted a stubborn defence of the city, but were finally forced to surrender by starvation and heavy Prussian bombardment.

Before becoming military governor of Paris, Trochu served in the Crimean campaign and in Italy (1859). In 1877, he published anonymously a criticism of the poor state of readiness of the French army, L'Armée française en 1877.
