trogon

Any species of the family Trogonidae, order Trogoniformes, of tropical birds, up to 50 cm/1.7 ft long, with resplendent plumage, living in the Americas, Africa, and Asia. They are primarily birds of forest or woodland, living in trees. Their diet consists mainly of insects and other arthropods, and sometimes berries and other fruit. Most striking is the quetzal.

The oldest known fossil trogon was found in France in 1999. The 33-million-year-old Primotrogon wintersteini is remarkably similar to the 38 extant trogon species, none of which are found in Europe.
