Trompeter von Säckingen, Der

Opera by Nessler (libretto by R Bunge, based on Scheffel's poem), produced in Leipzig on 4 May 1884. The opera was very popular in its day and often conducted by Mahler. The story concerns the trumpeter Werner, who loves Maria but her parents prefer Damian, who turns out to be a coward and a simpleton. After being banished, Werner returns to save the Baron from an uprising and is allowed to marry Maria.
