Troon

Harbour town and holiday resort in South Ayrshire unitary authority, Scotland, situated on the Firth of Clyde, opposite the island of Arran; population (2001) 14,800. Originally a small fishing hamlet, the settlement expanded into a port and shipbuilding centre with the construction of its harbour in 1808. Tourism is now a major industry. Visitor attractions include golf courses and other sports facilities. Royal Troon, founded in 1878, is a championship golf course.
