Gatchina

Town in the Leningrad oblast (region) of the Russian Federation, 45 km/30 mi southwest of St Petersburg; population (2001 est) 81,800. Gatchina was a favourite summer residence of Russian tsars and their families and the aristocracy, and contains a number of fine 18th-century buildings and parks.

The royal palace built in 1776–82 by Catherine (II) the Great's lover, Grigory Orlov, suffered great damage in World War II but has undergone extensive restoration.
