trouvère

A poet-musician of northern France in the 12th and 13th centuries. The trouvères cultivated an art similar to that of the troubadours in southern France. The art was encouraged in the north by Eleanor of Aquitaine, who married Louis VII in 1137; about 1,700 melodies have been preserved. The poems include chansons à personnages (narrative songs), poésies courtoises (courtly poems, mainly love-songs), and crusaders' songs. The notation and manner of performance of the songs was similar to that of the troubadours.
