Trowell, Brian (1931– )

English musicologist. A professor of music at Oxford University 1988–97, he edited music by Dunstable (joint editor, complete works) and published The Early Renaissance (1963), translations and articles on opera. He also published Elgar's Use of Literature.

He studied at Cambridge with Thurston Dart and was lecturer at Birmingham University 1957–62. He was director of opera at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London, 1963–67, and reader then professor at King's College from 1970.
