Trucial States

Former name (to 1971) of the United Arab Emirates. It derives from the agreements made with Britain in 1820 to ensure a truce in the area and to suppress piracy and slavery.

The treaty was signed in 1820 between Great Britain and the five states of Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm al-Quwain, and Fujairah to observe peace at sea and to refrain from piracy and slave trading. In 1866 Ras al Khaimah and Dubai were formed from Sharjah.
