Tucker, Robert C (1918– )

US Slavonic specialist and educator. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1975), he was the author of a number of books on the former Soviet Union and Stalinism. These included Politics As Leadership (1983), Political Culture and Leadership in Soviet Russia: From Lenin to Gorbachev (1987), and Stalin in Power: The Revolution from Above (1929–41) (1992). He was chairman of the Council on International and Regional Studies (1977–80) and director of the Program in Russian Studies (1963–73, 1980–82).

Tucker was born in Kansas City, Missouri. A guiding force in the analysis of the modern Soviet state, he taught longest at Princeton University (1962) where he was named professor emeritus (1984).
