Tugela| River in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa, which has its source at Giant's Castle Peak in the Drakensberg Mountains; length 250 km/155 mi. It flows southeast into the Indian Ocean north of Durban. About 8,600 ha/21,242 acres of the river valley are under irrigation. Dams, diversion works, and pumping installations allow transfer of water from the Tugela basin across the Drakensberg to the Vaal River. |
| Fighting took place during the Anglo-Zulu War (1879) at Isandhlwana and Rorke's Drift on the banks of the Tugela. |
