Tugela

Tugela

River in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa, which has its source at Giant's Castle Peak in the Drakensberg Mountains; length 250 km/155 mi. It flows southeast into the Indian Ocean north of Durban. About 8,600 ha/21,242 acres of the river valley are under irrigation. Dams, diversion works, and pumping installations allow transfer of water from the Tugela basin across the Drakensberg to the Vaal River.

Fighting took place during the Anglo-Zulu War (1879) at Isandhlwana and Rorke's Drift on the banks of the Tugela.
