Tuke, William

Tuke, William (1732–1822)

British philanthropist and pioneer in the humane and scientific treatment of the insane. As a member of the Society of Friends (the ‘Quakers’), he persuaded them to become involved in the care of the mentally ill by founding the York Retreat in 1796.

Tuke was born in York. He and his second wife, Frances, also established the Friends' Girls' School in his home town.
