Tullamore

County town of County Offaly, Republic of Ireland; population (2002) 11,100. It is situated on the Grand Canal and is a market centre for a fertile agricultural district. Medical products, clothing, and electrical goods are manufactured, and there is food processing. Tullamore has a number of fine Georgian buildings.

At Durrow Abbey, 6 km/4 mi north of Tullamore, is the site of a monastery said to have been founded by St Columba (Colum Cille) in 551, the only remains of which are a high cross and some gravestones. The Book of Durrow (Trinity College Library, Dublin) was written here in the 7th century.
