Tullow

Town in County Carlow, Republic of Ireland, situated on the River Slaney; population (2002) 2,300. It is a centre for anglers.

A memorial statue to Father John Murphy, a leader of the insurgents in the 1798 rebellion, stands in the market square.

Rathgall stone fort 5 km/3 mi east has four rings covering approximately 18 acres. Excavations here have shown evidence of occupation around 700 BC and early metalworking. There are also a number of pillar stones in the area.
