Tulsī Dās (1532–1623)

Brahmin Hindi poet and religious reformer. Tulsī Dās lived most of his life as an ascetic at the sacred site of Vārānasi (Benares). It was here, according to legend, that the the Hindu divine hero Rāma commanded him in a dream to write a version of the Sanskrit epic Rāmāyana – which tells of Rāma's escapades – in language that common people could understand. Tulsī Dās's version, Rāmcaritmānas, remains the most popular religious and epic poem in the whole of Hindi literature.
