Tumbes

Capital of the department of the same name in the far north of Peru, situated on the River Tumbes some 1,300 km/808 mi north of Lima; population (1996) 104,124. The conquistador Francisco Pizarro is said to have landed near Tumbes, at the Caleta La Cruz, to begin his invasion of Inca Peru in 1532. The mangrove swamps that surround the city are the site of bird and wildlife reserves.

Department on the northern coast of Peru, adjoining the frontier with Ecuador, largely a plain rising in the east of the Andean foothills; area 4,657 sq km/1,798 sq mi; population (1996) 173,605. Rice, tobacco, cotton, fruit, maize, and coconuts are produced in the region.

The first oil well in South America was drilled here, at the coastal town of Zorritos in 1863.

Tumbes has a tropical climate, with a mean annual temperature of 25°C. Severe flooding, brought by the periodic change in the Peru Current known as El Niño, caused great damage in this region in 1983.

January 23, Peru An explosion killed seven Peruvian military personnel who were inspecting ammunition at a base depot and injured fifteen other military personnel and 80 civilians on the base, which is located about half a mile from the city of Tumbes.
