Tumbes| Capital of the department of the same name in the far north of Peru, situated on the River Tumbes some 1,300 km/808 mi north of Lima; population (1996) 104,124. The conquistador Francisco Pizarro is said to have landed near Tumbes, at the Caleta La Cruz, to begin his invasion of Inca Peru in 1532. The mangrove swamps that surround the city are the site of bird and wildlife reserves. |

| Tumbes has a tropical climate, with a mean annual temperature of 25°C. Severe flooding, brought by the periodic change in the Peru Current known as El Niño, caused great damage in this region in 1983. |
