This rare plant is found only in the coastal deserts of Namibia and Angola. It is a gymnosperm like conifers and cycads but it is quite different from them. It uses its very long taproot to absorb the slightest moisture from deep below the ground, and may live for several hundred years.

Woody plant found in the deserts of southwestern Africa. It has a long, water-absorbent taproot and can live for up to 100 years. (Genus Welwitschia mirabilis, order Gnetales.)
