Tumwater

City in west-central Washington, on the Deschutes River, 3 km/2 mi southwest of Olympia; population (1990) 10,000. The Olympia Brewery is in the city, which is also known for its annual bluegrass festival.

Washington's first permanent settlement (1845) north of Fort Vancouver, it was a mill town whose prosperity was powered by water. In the early 19th century it included gristmills, sawmills, breweries, a tannery, and furniture and box factories. The site of the original town is now part of Tumwater Historical Park.
