Tuolumne

River in central California, USA; length 250 km/155 mi. It rises in the Yosemite National Park and flows through the Hetch Hetchy and Don Pedro reservoirs to join the San Joaquin River west of Modesto.

Course

After rising near Mount Lyell, the Tuolumne flows across the national park, past Tuolumne Meadows, and into the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, which after 1908 inundated much of the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne in order to supply San Francisco with water. Continuing southwest from the park into the Central Valley, it enters the Don Pedro Reservoir, impounded by the 178-m/585-ft-high New Don Pedro Dam (1971, replacing a 1923 structure), and continues west to the San Joaquin.
