Turgai

Oblast (region) in northern Kazakhstan; area 111,800 sq km/43,166 sq mi. The capital is Arkalyk. Bauxite is mined; wheat is grown and there is livestock breeding. The Turgai plain forms the greater part of the oblast. The Ishim (in the north of the region) is the most important river; other rivers are the Ulyzhilanshik and Karaturgay.

Turgai was formed in 1970 from parts of Qostanay (formerly Kustanai) and Akmola (formerly Tselinograd) oblasti.
