Turner Valley

Town in southwestern Alberta, Canada, on the Sheep River, across from Black Diamond, and 45 km/28 mi southwest of Calgary; population (1991) 1,400. The economy depends on petroleum services and tourism.

Settled around 1900, it was the site of the discovery, in 1914, of the first major gas and oil field in Alberta, which led to a 30-year boom. By World War II, however, the fields had been depleted.
