Turtle Mountains

Plateau in northern North Dakota and southern Manitoba. Rising 91–122 m/300–400 ft above the surrounding countryside, the formation runs 32 km/20 mi north–south and 68 km/40 mi east–west, and contains Lake Metigoshe State Park and the International Peace Garden.

The Turtles have timber, small deposits of manganese, and numerous lakes, which accommodate year-round tourism. On the southeastern border of the plateau is the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation (Chippewa; population (1990) 5,000).
