Tuscaloosa

City in western central Alabama, USA, on the Black Warrior River, southwest of Birmingham; population (2000) 77,900. Industries include lumbering, and the manufacture of chemicals, tyres, paper, and metal. Coal and iron deposits are mined nearby.

Founded by American Indian Creek peoples in 1809, it became a wealthy cotton-trading town and was capital of Alabama 1826–46.

Features

Tuscaloosa is the seat of the University of Alabama, founded in 1831. The Mound State Monument lies 26 km/16 mi south of the city on the banks of the Black Warrior. It contains the remains of a large 12th-century settlement, with 20 earth mounds, and a reconstructed American Indian temple. About 3,000 people were believed to have inhabited the site.
