Tuscaloosa| City in western central Alabama, USA, on the Black Warrior River, southwest of Birmingham; population (2000) 77,900. Industries include lumbering, and the manufacture of chemicals, tyres, paper, and metal. Coal and iron deposits are mined nearby. |
| Founded by American Indian Creek peoples in 1809, it became a wealthy cotton-trading town and was capital of Alabama 1826–46. |
Features Tuscaloosa is the seat of the University of Alabama, founded in 1831. The Mound State Monument lies 26 km/16 mi south of the city on the banks of the Black Warrior. It contains the remains of a large 12th-century settlement, with 20 earth mounds, and a reconstructed American Indian temple. About 3,000 people were believed to have inhabited the site. |
