Tsushima

Island in Nagasaki prefecture, Japan, between Korea and Japan in Tsushima Strait, area 702 sq km/271 sq mi; population (2005) 38,500. Forestry is the main industry, together with shiitake mushrooms, buckwheat, squid, and cultured pearls. The Russian fleet was destroyed by the Japanese under Admiral Togo here on 27 May 1905 in the Russo-Japanese War, and 12,000 Russians were killed. The chief settlement is Izuhara.

It is mountainous and 90% forested, and really consists of two islands, the uniting neck being dry only at low tide. There are also some 40 adjacent small islands.
