Tuxtla Gutiérrez

Capital of the state of Chiapas in southeast Mexico, situated 150 km/93 mi south of Villahermosa, on the Pan-American Highway; population (2005) 568,900. In 1892 it replaced San Cristóbal as the state capital. It is situated at an altitude of 522 m/1,713 ft in the northwest part of the central plateau of Chiapas. Tuxtla Gutiérrez is the distribution centre for all the commercial products of the state, which include cacao, coffee, cattle, and bananas.

The town grew up on the site of an Indian settlement. The Spaniards first visited it in 1546. The ruins of a Mayan settlement, at Bonampak, are nearby. There is a state archaeological museum in the town. An annual fair in December marks the festival of Guadelupe.

To the north of the town is the El Sumerido canyon, into which Indian warriors threw themselves rather than surrender during the Spanish conquest.
