Tweddle, Beth (1986– )

Gymnast, who became Britain's first ever world champion in the sport by winning the uneven bars event at the 2006 World Championships in Aarhus, Denmark. After winning her first British national championship in 2001, she won a bronze medal on the uneven bars at the 2002 European Championships – the first ever medal won by a Briton in the competition. In the same year, she won three medals at the Commonwealth Games: gold on the uneven bars, and silvers in the all-round and team disciplines. In 2003 she became the first British female gymnast to win a medal at the World Championships when she won bronze in the uneven bars in Anaheim, USA, and she repeated the feat two years later at the World Championships in Melbourne, Australia. She finished 2006 as World, European, and World Cup Champion on the uneven bars. In 2007, she won her seventh consecutive all-round national title.
