Hay, John (1838–1905)

US Republican politician. He was first assistant secretary of state 1878–81. In 1897, on the inauguration of President William McKinley, Hay was appointed ambassador to Britain, becoming subsequently secretary of state.

After the war with Spain of 1898, Hay directed the peace negotiations. He also negotiated the Hay-Pauncefote Treaty with Britain 1901, and the settlement of the Alaskan boundary dispute between the USA and Canada 1903.

Hay was born in Salem, Indiana. During the American Civil War he was one of Abraham Lincoln's private secretaries 1861–65.

He published Pike County Ballads 1871, which includes the songs ‘Little Breeches’ and ‘Jim Bludso’; Castilian Days 1871; a volume of poems 1890; and Abraham Lincoln 1890, in conjunction with J G Nicolay.
