Twin Falls

City and administrative headquarters of Twin Falls County, south-central Idaho, 217 km/135 mi southeast of Boise; population (1990) 27,600. It is named after the Snake River's Twin Falls (61 m/200 ft), Shoshone and Auger, to the northeast of the city. It is a trade, supply, and agricultural centre for a fertile river valley that yields dairy products, fruits, and sugar beet. Products include plastics and farm machinery.

The population mushroomed in the early 20th century after the arrival of irrigation and the Union Pacific Railroad. The College of Southern Idaho (1964) is here.
